Almost two thirds of companies see green IT as an important factor when purchasing systems according to recent research, but the primary motivator is to cut costs.

According to the State of Green IT Adoption Q2 2010 report by Forrester (via CRN) 59% of companies consider the green credentials of IT systems that they purchase a "vital part" of their IT strategy.

"Cost continues to be the core underlying motivation behind the implementation of green IT," said report author Daniel Krauss. "While this is understandable, especially during a time of budget restraint, we expect to see other motivations like brand perception increase in the future as green IT plays a more holistic role within the overall sustainability strategy of organisations."

Forrester said that one of the greatest opportunities relies in eliminating redundant applications in the data centre - with 24% of companies wanting to rationalise their data centres.
