Cabot Circus Reaches New Heights With IT Intelligence

Tuesday 23 December 2008

Cabot Circus, Bristol, one of the UK’s newest and most technically advanced shopping centres, has gone live with a Building Management System based on a converged IT and communications infrastructure from Redstone Converged Solutions.

Cabot Circus’ infrastructure is based on Redstone Converged Solutions' OneNET solution, a centralised Internet Protocol based network design that provides core network services such as telephony, LAN and Wireless, together with a wide range of IP enabled building management systems, including CCTV, access control, pedestrian counting, energy metering and lighting.

The solution deployed by Redstone Converged Solutions turns the whole centre into an intelligent building, which is optimising the customer and retailer experience and delivering ongoing operational cost efficiencies. The alliance between Land Securities Group plc and Hammerson plc, forming the Bristol Alliance LLP, is behind the £500m Cabot Circus urban regeneration project.

Andrew Thomson, UK operations director of Hammerson plc, one of the centre’s two development partners, said: “Cabot Circus is part of the growing trend for intelligent buildings in the retail sector.  Redstone Converged Solutions has worked closely with us to realise our vision of integrating construction and technology from the outset. A single IP infrastructure rather than a number of disparate systems gives us a flexible system and helps towards achieving a carbon neutral building.”

Neil Pennell, Head of Sustainability and Engineering at Land Securities Group plc, said: "The common network IP infrastructure solution implemented at Cabot Circus is a true integration of Building Automation and Information Technology systems and signifies a step change in the evolution of intelligent buildings in the retail sector.”

Rick Marshall, managing director of Redstone Converged Solutions, said: “The Bristol Alliance has pushed the boundaries of retail development and taken shopping centre network infrastructure to a new level. Using intelligent building technology results in a greater level of sustainability and reduces the cost of ownership through lower ongoing management costs.”

The shopping centre is part of a 1.5 million ft2 (139,353 m2) mixed-use master plan comprising retail, leisure, office and residential accommodation, occupying a 36-acre site in Bristol’s city centre.
